Vaidyanatha Ashtakam was composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya, a great philosopher and saint who revived Hinduism in the 8th century CE. He is also credited with composing many other hymns and works on Vedanta, the philosophy of Hinduism. He traveled across India and established four monasteries (mathas) in the four corners of the country.
Vaidyanatha Ashtakam consists of eight verses (ashtakam), each ending with the refrain "Sri Vaidyanathaya Namah Shivaya", which means "Salutations to Lord Shiva, who is Vaidyanatha". Each verse praises a different aspect of Lord Shiva, such as his compassion, his power, his grace, his beauty, his wisdom, his form, and his blessings. The hymn also mentions some of the legends and stories associated with Lord Shiva, such as his holding the Ganga river in his matted locks, his burning of Manmatha (the god of love), his destruction of Tripura (the three cities of demons), his giving of Pinaka (the bow) to Arjuna (the hero of Mahabharata), his curing of Rama, Lakshmana, Jatayu, Surya, Kuja, and Angaraka (various gods and beings) from their diseases and troubles, and his manifestation as Vaidyanatha in Parli Vaijnath temple in Maharashtra and Vaitheeswaran Koil temple in Tamil Nadu.
Vaidyanatha Ashtakam is chanted by devotees to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva for good health, happiness, and prosperity. It is believed that chanting this hymn thrice a day can cure any disease and grant longevity. It is also recited during the worship of Lord Shiva, especially on Mondays and during the month of Shravana (July-August), which are considered auspicious for Shiva worship.
